THANDI WINES
Thandi was the first Fairtrade certified wine producer in South Africa and in the world. Certification was gained in 2003, and it is since 2009 that Thandi acquired the license to sell its Fairtrade labelled wines in South Africa too. The company was established in 1995 as a BEE project and the name, Thandi, means 'nurturing love' in Xhosa. With its fine wines and great social values, Thandi grew and became the biggest black-owned exporting company in South Africa for wine. Its 250 farm workers own between 50 and 100% of the land over three farms and 55% of Thandi Wines (Pty) Ltd.
Farm workers employed by Thandi have had the opportunity to use the Fairtrade Premium to spend in projects for the benefit of the whole community. Amongst them:
Since last year, the income generated by the Premium is being saved in order to realise a big dream: the construction of a housing project on municipal land that will be fully owned by the workers. Thandi workers cannot wait to finally own a house!
