(5) INTERESTING INFO
Facts & Figures

  • If half of all wine sold in South Africa was Fairtrade certified, farm workers in the Western Cape wine industry would receive over R140 million a year to invest in education and improvement of their living conditions. For consumers, this comes down to 60 cents per bottle.
  • If every South African drank a cup of Fairtrade coffee every day, small-scale coffee farmers would receive over R750 million in Fairtrade Development Premium every year to invest in their businesses and in building roads, schools and health centres...and this will cost you only 5 cents a cup!
  • Globally, there are 1,24 million small-scale farmers and farm workers that participate in Fairtrade farming and that benefit directly from Fairtrade. If we count their families, we can approximate that Fairtrade benefits over 5 million people worldwide.
  • In Africa, there are 663,000 Fairtrade certified small-scale farmers and 69,200 farm workers working on Fairtrade farms.
  • In 2011, Fairtrade producers organisations earned over 61 million Euros in Fairtrade Development Premium. Small-scale farmers mostly re-invested this premium in developing their businesses, whereas farm workers spent more in education, child care and housing. See how this premium was spent in South Africa here.
  • We have just published five new stories on how Fairtrade benefits people on farms in Africa. Read them here.

I’ve received training on how to best manage my coffee trees, my children are taught at a school constructed using our Fairtrade premium, reducing our family’s expenses on education, and the development of a local spring has provided us with clean drinking water and all the health improvements that come with that.” - Tura Abba Goja, small-scale coffee farmer and member of Oromia Coffee Cooperative, Ethiopia

Being part of Fairtrade has given our people much more confidence. We don’t have to be ashamed of ourselves when we go into town anymore, because we know that we are able to improve our lives and educate ourselves and our families. It’s very uplifting!” - Japie Fourie, farm worker, uniWines Vineyards, Rawsonville, South Africa

Sometimes I think it was only the love of rooibos among these people that kept them going, because it wasn't really commercially viable. But when we changed to Fairtrade, everything changed in Wupperthal.” - Barend Salomo, Managing Director, Wupperthal Original Rooibos Cooperative, Wupperthal, South Africa

Through Fairtrade many of our women members have come to realise that they too can be leaders within their local cooperative societies – not just the men." - Sia Makishe, Fairtrade officer at KNCU, Moshi, Tanzania
