FAIRTRADE COFFEE WEEK

From : 09 May 2011 - Until : 14 May 2011 23:55
Location : All over South Africa

Fairtrade Label South Africa (FLSA) is excited to be launching South Africa's first Fairtrade Coffee Week, a local campaign that aims to increase awareness around Fairtrade, and especially Fairtrade coffee, amongst South Africans. The campaign runs along other Fairtrade initiatives worldwide, which culminate in World Fair Trade Day on May 14th.

During Fairtrade Coffee Week you can...

  • Grab a Fairtrade espresso, cappuccino or latte in one of the coffee shops, bars, restaurant or guesthouses that are participating in the campaign!

You might not know that Fairtrade coffee is served in many coffee shops in South Africa! We are working with them to make you aware that you actually have the possibility to choose to drink coffee that benefits people and environment. Where can you do that?? See the list of places at the bottom of this page!

  • Follow our and pages to uncover one interesting coffee fact every hour!

During the whole duration of the campaign, we will post one interesting, informative or fun fact about coffee and Fairtrade coffee every hour, from 9am until 5pm. For example, did you know that 1.4 billion cups of coffee are drunk every day in the world, or that there are 34 Fairtrade certified coffee co-operatives in Africa, or that "cafedomancy" is the science of reading the future in coffee grounds??

  • Come on Wednesday 11 or Thursday 12 May at the Labia Theater (68 Orange Street, Cape Town) to watch Black Gold and learn more about coffee trade and Fairtrade!

Black Gold (2006) is a famous documentary about coffee growers in the Oromia Region in Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee. It follows Tadesse Meskela, the general manager of Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union, who brings the authors through a journey into the struggles of small-scale coffee farmers and the opportunities given by sustainable and fair trade. We are showing the documentary at the Labia Theater in partnership with the documentary collective While You Were Sleeping. After each screening, you can participate in a short Q&A session with FLSA and Jonathan Robinson, director of Bean There Coffee Company.
